Engineering Support for Composite Helicopter Hangar |
Customer:
U.S. Navy
Engineering
Services: Software development, material property prediction
and synthesis, knowledge base development.
Project Dates:
1998 - present
Summary:
MSC has been part of the Integrated Product Team for a Composite
Helicopter hangar that will be build by Ingalls Shipyard, and placed
on a DDG-51 class destroyer. The hangar is a large deckhouse structure
made almost entirely from composite materials. The Team had to solve
many issues associated with integrating composites structures into
a Navy combatant, including: fire performance, outfitting, penetration
planning, complex joints, and habitability.
MSC's role in the program was to provide engineering support for
the team. These functions included:
- Joint design,
analyses, and test planning
- Structural
test element design and planning
- Material
allowables development
- Final structural
margins on composite structure
- Support of
fire safety evaluation
- Numerous
quick response, special studies
