Shearography
is a recently developed NDI technique that uses a form of interferometry
to detect flaws in composite and sandwich structure. The goal of
this Phase I SBIR was to demonstrate approaches for using solid
mechanics simulations to enhance the application of the shearography
method, and provide better interpretation of the results.

Simulation
of deflected shape that results from applying a vacuum to
a composite panel with an elliptically shaped delamination.

Simulations
of fringe patterns produced by shearography method, for three
different shear vector angles.

Analysis
of surface deflection profile for a composite skin on a foam
core, with a debond located at the skin/core interface. Analytic
method accounts for "soft" boundary condition provided
by core. Comparison is made to a finite element analysis of
both the skin and core.
