Project Profile
MIL-HANDBOOK-17 (Composite Materials Handbook) Secretariat

Customer: Army

Engineering Services: Data analysis, database and software development, web site development and maintenance.

Project Dates: 1986 - present

Summary: Military Handbook 17, Composite Materials is the definitive resource for statistically validated material properties for polymer, ceramic, and metal matrix composites. MIL-17 contains extensive guidance on the generation of allowables through testing, an extensive database of material properties, and guidance on the use of the data. More information on the activities of MIL-17 can be found at the organization's Web site. MSC created this website, and is responsible for its maintenance.

MSC is MIL-17's Secretariat contractor. In this role, MSC is responsible for editing and production of the handbook, performing material data reduction and review, and organizing the group's meetings. MSC has also built Internet systems that aid this widely dispersed volunteer organization in tracking documents and speeding the review process.

The handbook is available from the DoD Single Stock Point, and is commercially printed by ASTM. Both MSC and ASTM also offer an interactive, electronic version of the handbook.

Vision

"Develop world-class engineering handbooks for structural applications of composite materials. These handbooks will include standards for test/characterization methods, statistics and databases, as well as guidelines for processing, design and analysis.

All information contained in the Mil-17 Composite Material Handbooks is developed by working groups comprised of experts from industry, government, and academia from around the world, and subjected to a rigorous review process prior to its official release."
